Over the last couple weeks a couple changes have happened that requires everyone to know about.  The first of which is the Art of the Peace Exhibition Show and Sale.  There was an unexpected change of venues which now puts us in the Centre for Creative Arts.  And within this change there are a couple goods and bads.  The bad, drop off deadlines have been pushed up to Saturday, Sept. 4 (1-4pm), Tuesday, Sept. 7 (9am – 5pm or 7pm – 10pm) and Wednesday, Sept. 8  (9am – 5pm or 7pm – 10pm) at the Centre for Creative Arts.  However, with the deadline push we now will get a show that is showing for the month rather than a couple days.  I would like everyone to help me with this by talking to everyone.  Previous to the change of venue, I spent 4 weeks talking about the exhibition, so therefore there will be lots of people that might not know and miss the cut off.  I would like to add that the show doesn’t have a theme or anything attached to it forcing the artist down a certain path other than size.  I will include a link to a print off on Art of the Peace pertaining to the exhibition.  http://www.artofthepeace.ca/membership/art-of-the-peace-members-show-and-sale

The idea behind the show is to run along side with Alberta Art days this year.  September 17-19 will be a dates of this.  Grande Prairie is one of three cities in Alberta that is getting funded for the celebration from the Provincial Government.  It should bring out a number of new views and faces to the activities planned throughout the weekend.  As a result, the Centre is in the middle of the Arts Days giving the show more oppertunity once again.

Please note that the show is for members.  And if you aren’t a member that isn’t a problem either.  $10 is the membership price which will include receiving the magazine.  But, more than anything else the magazine is out there to help the artists of the area.  The group is a non-profit organization with goals of unifying our visual arts community in the region.  I have supplied a membership form link.

And now, the SECOND BIG one.  That time of the year has come along where we prepare for the Symposium.  October 15-17.  And a couple people have already been working hard on getting the artists that we were looking for.  The three artist:

Larissa Doll.  http://www.artofthepeace.ca/issue-14/larissa-doll-just-under-the-surface.  She is the artist on the cover of our last edition.

Dianne Bos.  http://www.diannebos.com/index.html.  A pinhole photographer.

Trudy Ellen Golley.  http://www.alluvium.ca/.  A ceremic artist.

We are turning the weekend into a PACKED full weekend of involvement, (plus a good chance of wine and cheese with the artists).  Our site hasn’t been updated yet with the forms (Monday or Tuesday).  However, I will tell you that we have already started booking for the talks on Saturday and the workshops that the artists are going to host on the Sunday.  In my opinion at this point we will get close to our maximum levels.  So, if there are questions…now would be a great time to start.  As a side note, we want to give the option of coming to Grande Prairie for the weekend to everyone…so…one of the “Tigers” on our committee went out and looked for help.  At this point, it looks like we got confirmation form the Pomeroy Group to give a discounted rate on hotels to the people coming out of town.  That means it will be even a greater oppertunity for everyone to get 3 of your best friends and stay the night and make the weekend FULL of arts and communication with a huge group of people.

I think the best part about these events, they are giant mixers for artist.  How often often do we get a chance in the Peace Area: Alberta/B.C. to mingle and meet people in our industry?  I feel I have had a conversation like this once a week, but the talent that going through our region is big and thick.  Everyone has something to offer.  The shows and oppertunities are all around us.  And this will help.

I know there is more information out there, but this is getting longer than I first anticipated.  And there is a chance you are out of coffee.  So, I will stop, now allowing you to get the another cup of java and get to the studio.  We are a month from deadlines…and I just realized yesterday I don’t have mine done either.  Feel free to forward this to others that might be interested.  So, positive thoughts, email me questions, and keep you pencil on the paper.
